Because of my son's, Andrew's, excitement about his wooden toy train collection of Thomas the Tank Engine, a keen interest I had as a boy with classic toy trains and model railroads was re-kindled within me. Was I having as much fun as my son with all this collecting of toy trains and building miniature railroads? You bet I was! Bowing to my renewed captivation with classic toy trains, I convinced my wife that we needed to visit model railroad museums here in our state of Texas. I think the most fun trip for me was when we went to a Harrold's Model Train Museum in Tyler. Harrold, the elderly gentleman who runs the museum, is quite a character. He has been collecting antique toy trains and model trains for over forty-five years and has put them all in a converted two bedroom house. He charges a small fee for visitors to come in and take a tour of his collection of classic toy trains and model trains which he has behind glass cases. These reach from knee-high to the ceilings and run along every wall in the place. Of course he also has built two large and very detailed model railroad layouts. In future articles on this website I will introduce you to this gentleman and give you more details on some of the classic toy trains he has collected and how he acquired them in the first place.
